- They are known for offering good quality at a competitive price, making them a popular choice for both beginners and experienced sublimation.
Sublimation Paper: This isn’t just any paper. It’s specifically designed for the sublimation process. It has a special coating that:
- Holds Ink: It prevents sublimation ink from being absorbed deeply into the paper fibers. Instead, the ink sits closer to the surface.
- Releases Ink: Under heat and pressure, this coating allows the sublimation ink to efficiently transform into a gas and release from the paper, bonding with the polyester fibers of the blank item.
A4 Size: This refers to the standard paper dimension of 210 mm x 297 mm (or approximately 8.3 x 11.7 inches). This is a very common size for desktop sublimation printers and is suitable for printing on a wide variety of smaller sublimation blanks, such as:
- Coasters
- Keychains
-
Mugs (especially 11oz and 15oz)
- Small photo panels
- Phone cases
-
Small t-shirt designs or patches
- Puzzles
Key Attributes of A-SUB A4 Sublimation Paper (and good sublimation paper in general):
- High Transfer Rate: A-SUB papers are typically designed for a high ink release, meaning a significant percentage of the ink printed on the paper transfers to your blank. This results in vibrant, rich colors and minimizes wasted ink. Many boast 98% or higher transfer rates.
- Fast Drying: Good sublimation paper, including A-SUB, is formulated to dry almost instantly after printing. This prevents smudging and allows for quicker handling and pressing.
- No Fracturing/Cracking: Quality sublimation paper should not crack or fracture during the heat press process, ensuring a smooth and even transfer of your design.
- Anti-Curl / Lay-Flat Performance: This is crucial for smooth feeding through your printer and for precise alignment during pressing. Papers that curl can cause printing errors or uneven transfers.
- Vivid Color Reproduction: When used with compatible sublimation inks and printers, A-SUB paper aims to produce true-to-design colors with excellent vibrancy and detail on the sublimated product.
- Compatibility: A-SUB paper is generally compatible with common desktop sublimation printers like Epson (especially converted EcoTank models), Sawgrass, Ricoh, and Brother, provided they are using sublimation inks.
- Grammage (GSM): A4 sublimation papers from A-SUB typically come in weights like 100gsm, 115gsm, or 120gsm.
Lighter GSM (e.g., 100gsm): Often preferred for soft substrates like fabrics, where less ink might be needed and flexibility is a plus.
Heavier GSM (e.g., 115gsm, 120gsm, 125gsm): Often recommended for hard substrates like ceramic mugs, metal, or glass, as they can sometimes offer better ink absorption and a more controlled release for longer press times
- Single-Sided (Usually): Most sublimation papers are coated on one side only. It’s vital to print on the correct side (usually the brighter white side, or the side without any watermark/logo). A-SUB often has their logo on the back to help identify the non-printable side.
- Cost-Effectiveness: A-SUB is often chosen for its balance of quality and affordability, making it a good option for hobbyists and small businesses.
